I work many hours doing what I do,
I build the fences that keep me from you.
I carry all the lumber of past experience
And nail it all together with resentments.

I try and put in bricks that are thick with hostilities,
Anything to keep you away from me.
I work from sun up till long past dusk
Keeping you away is simply a must.

I grow tired and thirsty from all the work
I do, but I can't let this fence down, I must
not see you. I try and keep it mended, no
holes can show through, it must keep us
separate; me and you.

I sometimes long to tear it down, and let
you inside, but there's too many heartaches
that I have to hide. I can not let you see
the me that's deep inside, so building fences
is what I do with pride.

I know that tearing down these fences is the
best, but I keep on building, I can never rest
For if I stop building, and take time out to know
The you that I am running from, a friendship
it will grow.

I work long hours doing what I do
I must keep building fences
To keep me from you.
